For the past two weeks seniors have brainstormed, written and revised their important life stories to fit the Common Application and other college essay prompts.
Senior Humanities teacher Lori Fisher shared two main reasons that this is the first project of the year. The first reason is the valuable storytelling and creative writing skills that prepare students for the rest of the year. Second, “it’s important for [our] sanity and mental health,” according to Lori. With large projects coming up in fall, it is important to stay ahead of the workload and the college application process. Lori’s favorite part of college essays is getting to know people really well from only a few hundred words. She relayed, “typically [students] used storytelling and they have used creative writing techniques and words to really bring themselves to life on the page.” View a few exceptional sample essays from Za Barrett, Roan Harvey and Julia Glotfelty. The next time you are in the East building, you can get to know our seniors and get a closer look at their essays, the colleges they are applying to, and their amazing photographs. The display will be exhibited through November. |
Reflection
A new budding journalist at Animas High School takes on many roles and responsibilities this past semester that have led to her growth as a person and a journalist.
Ella has done a variety of different types of media at Animas, including stories, short videos for instagram, and taking on a leadership role in the Yearbook. She describes that she thinks part of this class is, “Being a journalist at all times,” as her teacher has always said you’re a journalist all the time.
Giving an example of when she went to the new building with her friend just to “check it out” she thought about filming the school and giving a quick tour. Luckily she had a media pass on her so she pulled out her phone and started to record. She also stated, “When you look important people think you are important, so basically fake it till you make it. That's all I did to get the coverage and was let right in, no questions asked.”
Once the yearbook start-up was initiated Ella jumped right into the task at hand. She was and is determined to have this yearbook be successful. She has many other people to collaborate with and has been working really hard on it saying, “The hard part is getting people to turn in things that you want like photos and such. You really have to push them to get what you need but other than that it has been a rather successful experience and hopefully next semester all the people doing Yearbook will be in the same class so we can collaborate in person.”
Ella hopes that next semester she can finally write her feature on Jeff since she hasn't gotten the time to do that. She stated, “I not only want to get this feature done for myself but also for jeff and the amount of people that need to hear his story.
